Academia in Tel-Aviv
The Making of a University
Uri Cohen
Academia in Tel-Aviv: the growth of a university, described as one of the most important academic projects in Israel: the Tel-Aviv University is exposed to urban, political and academic factors which led to the consolidation of a new research university in the pre-independence period and in the first decades of the State of Israel. The interests of important people, groups and organizations become clear in their attitude towards the establishment of a second university in Israel, among them heads of the Tel-Aviv municipality and its clerks, business men, professional unions, prime ministers, ministers, members of the Knesset as well as state organizations, such as the council of higher education. The evident resolute opposition of The Hebrew University in Jerusalem against the founding of a new autonomous university becomes clearer by their presenting comments by the academic staff at The Law and Economics School as well as at the Tel-Aviv University.
